I just wanted to take a moment and wish everyone a happy Easter! I hope that wherever you find yourself today, that it is filled with good times and great people. For me personally, Easter means more than colored eggs and sweets. It is a time of year where I like to give thanks to God for His sacrifice for me. Now don't go running away! I promise we are not going to whip out the humongous family Bible and start to preach... then again, maybe we will! I'll see you all next time!
Welcome back Shock Troops! It has been a while since our last post here at Holy Shock and that is partly due to the unending snow that we had around here, which by the way took out my internet, and then my own travelling across the winter wonderland. The good news is that I was home, at least this past weekend, and my internet issues have been fixed! This means that I should be able to focus on things around here again. Speaking of things around here, I have been giving the site quite a bit of thought lately.
Now before anyone goes worrying that I am slipping back into the not-so-fun things like looking at site hits and all of that stuff... I haven't been. to be completely honest, I rarely even look at that stuff now days. Instead I was thinking more about what type of content I wanted to focus on. Things like do I stay strictly with the games I play online or is it okay to expand into other areas? I started thinking about this stuff while I was out of town actually. One night the other week, I stretched out on my bed and was curious to see what was going on around the blog world. To my surprise, a very large of portion of the blogs I use to follow have either shut down or the writer has chosen to start a new blog that focuses on things outside of the gaming realm.
It kind of hit me because, as I have shared, I pondered what to do with Holy Shock for quite some time. It got me thinking about things that I enjoy that I have often debated on starting other blogs to cover, but then snap myself back as I feel I barely have enough time to keep up with things around here. At this point, I really have not come to a decision, but one thing I do know for sure, Holy Shock will always be the number one focus of mine. How the rest of it plays out is anyone's guess. Well, I hate to drop an update post, but quite honestly I felt it best to share with you all where I have been at and why things have been quiet around here. I'll see you guys next time!
Hey everyone! I cannot even begin to describe how good it feels to be sitting here writing my first actual post for Holy Shock in a very, very long time. I am sure some of you may have thought that Holy Shock had gone the way of so many other blogs and gaming sites, but that is far from the truth. There was not a day that passed by where I didn't find myself trying to sit down and write out a post, but something else always seemed to creep up. The truth is for a while there I was even debating on just throwing up a goodbye post and ending it all; however, I am no quitter and the honest truth is that I really love having this venue to share what gaming is like from my perspective.
I think part of the problem with the site actually was that I lost the focus of writing about playing the games I love from my perspective, but instead started focusing on ways to improve the site and make it grow. I started seeing the numbers of hits or lack of them on some days, and rather than just write from my heart, I chose to try and create a whole new concept for the site. In the end, it always resulted in the same thing... nothing! I came to the conclusion that it resulted in this because I wasn't having fun any more. I started to transition from viewing gaming as a hobby and something to do with my friends into something that was focused on everything but having fun.
So I decided to take a lot of time off from the site, from video games, and from a whole lot of other things. I spent the last year reconnecting with myself. During that time I would catch myself grabbing a notebook and jotting down ideas of things I wanted to write about. Some of these were gaming related and some of them were not. I am not sure how or even if I will choose to use any of those ideas, but what I do know is that I am absolutely back to having fun playing video games!
So what have I been up to? Well, when Warlords (or WoD for future note) dropped, I waited a couple days before I even bought a copy of the game. I wasn't really sure if I wanted to spend the money on something that I had been slowly playing less and less of. I finally decided to purchase it and so I ordered my collector's edition from Amazon and a couple days later was back in the game. All and all, I maybe started a week or so behind most everyone else.
I felt like a change might be a good thing and with the long queues to log onto Kil'Jaeden, I chose to level my shaman, Holeycow, over on Daggerspine. I made it to cap pretty quickly, as that was my focus at the time. I decided I would race to cap and then begin the grind for raiding. Well, I got bored of it and pretty much gave up playing the game with the exception of listing stuff on the auction house. Even the auction house was boring to me and I ended up losing a ton of items and gold due to not even logging in to clean out the mailbox.
All this was happening right around Christmas and New Years. If you don't know, then let me fill you in on my lack of love from around the end of November through the end of February. It is a busy time at my job and I think just about every family member and friend have their birthdays crammed in there too. Not really too sure why I mentioned all of that, aside to say that this is a really busy time of the year for me.
The funny thing is that I started really missing just sitting down and playing video games. I was sitting in my house one night watching my son play a Mario game. He was laughing so hard at something he had done that he barely made any sense at all. It made me feel nostalgic. It also made me miss the fun that I had always known. Well, needless to say, that spark lit the fire back inside me and it reminded me that you need to just have fun sometimes, and that is exactly what I have been doing for the last couple weeks.
I was sitting at my desk one night and I was getting ready to play some Minecraft when the urge hit me to play WoW instead. I kind of laughed at myself for a moment, but then I thought why not? So I logged in and grabbed Holeycow and started running some random battlegrounds. I know right now I just lost some of you as soon as I mentioned random battlegrounds! I like them though, always have and probably always will. I cannot remember how many I played, but before I knew it, it was eleven-thirty at night and I had to make myself log off in order to get ready for bed.
Well, needless to say, I logged back in and have been logging in a little more often ever since. One night as I was logging in, the character screen popped up for Kil'Jaeden. I am not sure why because I have been pretty much ignoring my characters on that server. I looked at the list and I saw Ruhtra standing there and I just had to log in. My bars were a wreck! My gear was outdated! I had no clue what my key binds were, but you know? I didn't care. It was like starting all over! I did a quick set-up to get a spec worked out for prot and off I went!
I still have no clue what is the proper build. Haven't taken the slightest look to see what stats I should be prioritizing! Nope, instead I have logged in and slung my shield at enemies and looted their corpses shortly after its initial impact. I honestly don't care about what is the right or wrong way of playing at the moment. All I care about is that feeling that I am having fun!
So what does the future hold for Holy Shock? Well, at some point I imagine I will actually start to study builds and begin sharing my thoughts on that sort of thing, but for the short term future, I am simply going to have fun and share that fun with all of you!
So what have you all been having fun with lately? Make sure and share it with us in the comments section! See you guys next time!
